Valerian! The sleepers friend. Like the little path to Valium should, valerian is also good for relaxing, anti-stress, and remarkably relaxing. He smells a little feety, but some of us like that! Take it easy with valerian! Too much can keep you up.
That's pretty much what valerian does. Calms you down. Insomnia, nervous exhaustion, stress and anything of that ilk are all waiting for valerian. It's also a good antispasmodic.
My Valerian Youth
by Sadiqullah Khan
Come see me love, my valerian youth,
Like a flower laden branch, a bouquet
My bosoms are the fruits of heaven;
Red wine, intoxication, a dream
My lips, like a bud, for a nightingale
To relish. Spring is me, my airs alas!
A haunt forever, my lover’s lament.
It's an olive green to olive brown coloroed liquid of a warm-woody, balsamic rootlike odor with a distinct animal undertone of musklike character and great tenacity. A fresh-green, slightly camphoraceous top-note is typical of the odor of a good valerian. Valerian oil can be used in perfumery for its musky-woody balsamic notes which give interesting effects in combonitation with patchouli and oakmoss. It blends well with pines and lavenders.
Sleep and more sleep. Inhaling the essential oil, in addition to whatever else youa re doing, has been found to promote and deepen sleep. It's also indicated against insomnia, nervous indigestion, migrane and nervous tension.
Blends well with lavender, frankincense, marjoram, clary sage
As with most essential oils, dilute before using on skin. Perform a patch test before use if essential oil sensitivity is suspected. Do not take essential oils internally. Do not use on children or pets. Seek advice from a trained aromatherapist before using on people with compromised immune systems. Keep away from eyes and mucus membranes.
There's an entry in the safety data saying valerian can prolong narcotic-induced sleep and therefore it recommends avoiding barbituates.
