Product Information

Ocimum basicilicum Linalool (Sweet basil)

Labiatae family (lamiaceae)

Distilled in Egypt from certified organically grown plants. Basil grows wild all over the Mediterranean and is hardy enough to grow almost anywhere.

There are over 70 species and several chemotypes, and ours is the Linalool variety, meaning French basil, meaning it’s got less, or no, camphor, and less estragole than other basils, and it’s generally considered safe to use in aromatherapy (GRAS.)

Basil has inspired a lot of poetry:

The Basil Plant

Poem by C.P. Sharma

The Basil plant is gods abode
Trinity’s blessings in it endowed
Blessed the place where it grows
Air purifies where its fragrance flows

Among all herbs, juices and medicines
Appeared first on ‘Churning the Ocean’
Panacea for ills of physique and mind
Softens speech, prompts actions kind

It cures all cold, coughs and hiccups
Purges of impurities, the spirit ups
Regulates the body’s temperature
Blood circulation and bile profile

Ample of oxygen Basil plant generates
Let your life with divinity venerate
Have Basil plant in your compound
Worship, nurture for health profound

She Loved The Smell Of Basil

Poem by Jankovic Zoran

I loved to see her smile.
It was early morning. She was sleeping.
I went to the garden and the kitchen,
and she was still asleep.

I carefully placed my tray
to the nightstand and I waited.
The room smelled of basil and fried egg.
She turned, opened her eyes, and smiled.

Now we'll go to Arctander:

The absence of camphoraceus notes and the presence of a perfect odor balance between linlool and estragole is characteristic of true Sweet Basil oil.

The oil is usually pale yellow or almost colorless. Its odor is sweet-spicy, slightly green, fresh, with a faint balsamic undertone and a lasting sweetness. In perfumes, Sweet Basil has been a “classic” material in “Origan” type of perfumes and bases. In chypres, crêpe de chines, and certain aldehydic and green perfume types, the oil can introduce some very interesting notes. It blends well with a large variety of other oils: opoponax, clary sage, bergamot, lime, oakmoss….It works very well as a favor too.

Battaglia says:

Digestive system—nausea, flatulence, nausea, etc

Immune System—can help reduce a fever

Musculoskeletal—Aches and pains and rheumatism

Nervous system—gives the mind strength and clarity

Reproductive System—menstruation, cramps

Respiratory System—sinus congestion, coughs, influenza

He suggests using this topically at low dilutions, and by inhalation. Not for the bath. This essential oil is contraindicated for pregnancy. Other types of basil may have other, more serious contraindications.

There is a lot more information in Sal’s book, The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy.
