This is a lovely oil; lavender family, yes, and with spiky notes. Lavandin is a hybrid—a cross between Lavender and Spike Lavender. He grows at lower altitudes than true lavender. Virtually all American "lavender" is actually Lavandin.
Some people think lavandin is stronger. That's subjective, so you can make up your own mind.
Arctander says
Lavandin oil is a pale yellow to almost colorless liquid. The odor is strongly herbaceous with a very fresh camphene-cineole-like top-note which should not be distinctly camphoraceaous. The rich, woody herbaceous notes of the body components will usually become predominant within the first 60 seconds on a perfume blotter. It’s important to evaluate a lavandin oil on a freshly dipped blotter since the characteristic notes of lavandin and the typical notes of poor or unadulterated ones will show up immediately. The odor oft he oil is not very tenacious, and after a few hours on the blotter, it becomes impossible to distinguish the quality.
Lavandin oil is used for light, refreshing notes and often at a high concentration. It’s also excellent in detergents and soaps.
Lavandin blends well with cloves, bay leaf, cinnamon, citronella, cypress, geranium, pine, thyme, patchouli, labdanum, oakmoss, etc
Battaglia says
Lavandin is of the lavender family but it’s not exactly the same. The plant itself is larger and the flowers are darker purple/blue. Its strengths are mostly in its greater availability and lower price point. It also boosts and strengthens a lavender blend. There are three main lavandin clones: Abrial, Super and Grosso. Ours in Super.
