Product Information
Abies balsamea
Pinaceae family
Harvested in the wild and steam distilled in Quebec from needles and twigs.
Balsam fir is native to Eastern North America and thrives in the United States from Minnesota to Maine and down to the Appalachians and across Canada from the Maritimes to Alberta. Balsam Fir is the provincial tree of New Brunswick.
Traditional uses for this tree involve mostly needs rather than essential oil and both humans and other animals can eat these needles right off the tree! The needles can also be made into a tea. Needles are high in Vitamin C.
Traditional Medicinal uses for the needles, inner bark, bark, pitch, sap, juice, are widespread by many First Nation peoples: Abenaki, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Cree, Innu, Iroquois, Maliseet, Menominee, Mi’kmaq, Ojibwe, Penobscot and Potawatomi are a few of them.

Arctander says
The oil is a pale yellow or almost water-white mobile oil of a peculiar oily-balsamic, somewhat resinous, but also fresh and sweet odor, resembling the odor of spruce. Oil of Abies balsamea serves as a “pine and spruce” fragrance in fresh-balsamic “fir needle” blends, Christmas tree odors, fougères, etc. Blends well with galbanum, cistus, lavenders, oakmoss and rosemary.
