Eugenia carophyllata Clove essential oil is probably best known for its heroics against toothache. But in small amounts its also and handy and fragrant helper for pain and inflammation

Product information

Myrtaceae family

Grown and distilled in Sri Lanka from organically grown cloves

Cloves are one of many essential oils derived from plants in the Moluccas, and southeast Asia. There are records of clove cultivation going back 2000 years.

Clove essential oil is extremely useful but it's a dermal irritant. Don't use it undiluted in the bath and be careful using it undiluted on your skin. We usually think of clove as the first thing you put in your mouth for a toothache.

Cloves

Neil Steward McLeod

Set in the Indian Ocean,
Off the African coast, but not far,
There's a fertile oasis surrounded by sea-
The Island of Zanzibar.

This mystical tropical haven
Set with palaces, palms and a fort,
Is dotted with trees that bear a spice
Which for centuries long has been sought.

The Caesars had seen it imported,
Though they knew not from whence it came.
They brought it by galley from Palestine
To relieve their dental pain.

This valuable spice was transported
By caravan over the sand,
From a port in the south of Arabia
And by dhow from that far distant land.

The seeds of this spice have a fragrant oil,
An obtundent for which many strove.
We know the oil as Eugenol,
The remarkable spice is the clove.

Arctander says

Clove Bud oil is characterized by a fresh-fruity topnote, with a touch of an scetic odor, making the scent quite refreshing. The eugenol note is distinctly subdued, sweetened and freshened--the overall scent is sweet-spicy. It blends well in "carnation" bases, and will add richness to rose and other large florals. Also, lavandin, clary sage, bergamot, bay leaf, and ylang ylang.

Battaglia says

As an antiseptic, and for the prevention of colds and flu

As  a digestive, carminiative, anti-spasmodic, stimulating digestion, restoring appetite, and removing flatulence.

Musculoskeletel system, as part of a massage for arthritis, rheumatism, sprains

Nervous system as a stimulent, particuarly with peppermint.

As always, there is way more information regarding the aromatherapeutic uses of clove in The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy.
