Cade is a smoky, interesting oil, made from the distructive distillation and then rectification of a type of juniper wood. It's an excellent addition to your perfumers palette.

This oil used to be known as Juniper Tar, as it is made using a destructive distillation from the wood of Juniperus oxyzedrus.

The oil is then rectified, using either steam or vacuum distillation, into this essential oil, easier to work with than Juniper tar. This tree grows mainly in the Western Mediterranaen areas, like Morocco and Spain. This is according to Arctander, and so "125 to 200 metric ton" output "used mainly for veterinary medicine and human skin diseases" might have a changed a bit since 1960.

The oil remains recognizable throughout the years, with its smoky-pheonolic tar odor. The oil color varies fromclear through orange brown to dark brown. Perfumery uses include leather notes, smoky, woody-pheonolic, dry and warm, forsest notes, base notes, fougères, and pine, as well as imitation of an oakmoss note.

Arctander recommed its use in soap perfumes, utitlizing its (mild) disinfecting properties. He duggests combining with thymes, oregano, clove, cassie, tea tree.

Cade oil is not really used too much in aromathaerapy, although said disinfecting properties point to use in soap perfumes, as Arctander says, or household blends, your imagination and feeling for cade will inspire you.

Test for discoloration--if that might be a problem, take care as cade can stain.
