Product Information

Piper nigrum

Piperaceae family

Originally from the Indian Ocean area, Black pepper is one of the oldest cultivated spices, with a history of culinary use for more than 2000 years.

Organically grown in Sri Lanka.

Steam distilled from unripe peppercorns, partly dried and crushed.

Arctander says

Black pepper oil is almost water-white to pale greenish-gray; it's mobile but becomes more viscous in ageing. It's odor is fresh, dry-woody, warm-spicy, reminscent not only of black pepper and elemi. The flavor is flat, somewhat dry-woody, and bitter at high concentrations. The essential oil has no pungency at all since those constitiuents don't come over in the distillation. Arctander says black pepper oil is interesting with cloves, , carnation and rose.

Blends well with basil, cardamom, clove, cinnamon bark, ginger, helichrysum, jasmine, lavender, lemongrass, lime, marjoram, nutmeg, orange, roses, rosemary, ylang ylang

Battaglia says

In clinical aromatherapy, black pepper is recommended for aenemia, to stimulate the spleen,  adn for bruises and chilblains. It's also considered beneficial for the digestive system and the musculoskeletal system, in particular for rheumatism, arthritis, muscle aches and pains, tired and aching limbs and stiffness.

It's well worth investing in Salvatore Battaglia's The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy--there's an incredible amount of information available, for each oil and aromatherapy in general, chemistry, history, etc, and black pepper in particular has a lot of information.
