Trygve Harris
Trygve is the owner and founder of Enfleurage. Originally from Southern California, she currently divides the majority of her time between New York City and Salalah, Oman. Interested in oils and incense from her earliest years, she has managed to marry her love of aromatics with her love of travel, regularly journeying to some of the globes most interesting and remote parts to explore the local olfactory delights. Trygve spends much of her time these days distilling Frankincense, trying to learn Arabic, and enjoying the natural beauty of Arabia. While her specialties are agarwood, frankincense, and the local aromatics of the Arabian Penninsula, Ms Harris is enthusiastic and charmed by the fragrant natural world in general, and is continually expanding her experience and knowledge in many areas, including essential oils, their lives as plants, their growth, harvest, pollination, extraction, and these effects on neighboring creatures. Trygve is a writer, sporadically practices yoga, and has a blackbelt in Taekwondo. She enjoys playing with dogs, chanting with Krishna Das, and hanging around with friends.

She also loves to pay attention to four legged friends about town, including her adopted alleycat, Skinny: who has transitioned nicely to a housecat. Enfleurage is the process of extracting the aromatic soul of a plant (usually a flower) in the gentlest way possible, using a clean solid fat. Traditionally this was pig lard, but today we are extracting using palm oil. The blossoms are slowly persuaded to give up their scent as they die, and are replaced daily by other freshly picked blossoms until the fat is saturated with the flower's essence. This pomade is then washed with ethyl alcohol to coax the fragrant molecules out, after which the alcohol is evaporated or distilled out, leaving a rich and concentrated pure flower oil. Of course, it's a little more complex than this, but that's the general idea. |
